In order to protect Ram marsh from subterrain waters a Danube's branch which went round was damed at its upper part near Zatonje village in 1971. In this way the Silver lake appeared, 14 kilometres long, 300 meters wide and at some points 3 meters deep. In the afternoon hours when the sun sets, millions of sparks make a silver reflection on the surface, so the lake got the attribute Silver. With its outstanding beauty it immediately became a favourite vacation place, the base for tourism in this area and received a popular name the serbian sea. The claim that the Silver lake is a jewel of continental tourism in this part of Serbia is not an exaggeration. Due to strong pumps the water level in the lake is always lower than in the Danube and it constantly provides the flow of fresh water into the lake. Along its subterranian way water is filtered through numerous dunas, which makes it very clean and clear in order to keep such quality of water one million and three hundred euros for cleaning the lake from mere were provided by the national investment plan. The Silver lake is rich with fish and it is a real heaven for fishermen. All kinds of freshwater fish are present: catfish, perch, carp.. The coolness of black locust forest and a good climate make a stay at the Silver lake an unforgetable memory. The Silver lake offers exquisite opportunities for many water sports except motor navigation. Kayaks, pedal boats and rowing boats can be rented for a drive on the lake.
