Iz starih spisa

Veliko Gradiste

Traces of the town

Veliko Gradiste

Gradiste, as a town,is the largest place in the district after Pozarevac. It’s six hours of walk away from Pozarevac, and connected with it with well filled up road. There is a headquarter of Ram counti in it. It has a lower secondary school with four classes, male and female school. Besides, there’s a post office,_telegraph, steamboat station, customs office and ferry transport to Hungary … The Church is new and beautiful. People from Gradiste are winsome, helpful and interesting. They are always the first in every patriotic society. No cry of patriotism remained with no response among,_the youth and citizens of Gradiste. I guess, there isn’t a single society in Serbia.that would not gladly have a sub-committee and its members here. We note this fact, with pleasure, this example of sacrifice and patriotism, that many of our larger towns could look up to … Gradiste is by its origin from the recent times … It is not mentioned in our older monuments. Neither,it was an important place during the time of the Turks. There is quite lively import and export trade in it, becouse of its position at the end of the golden valley of the river Pek. Gradiste is placed on the left bank of the river Pek.  The name of the town itself says.that once there had to be some more important fort. During the Romans there has been a town named Pincum here, which the Byzantines later called Pincus. In Pajtinge stables this is a Roman place marked as a Punicum, 13 miles away from Viminakije. The name of this town, as well as the name of the river Pek (Pincus), will be associated with the name of Pikenezovacs, who were inhabited this area from the days of Ptolemy. Traces of this Roman city are barely recognizable today. The town had a square base and towers at the corners. While digging the foundations of their buildings, people from Gradiste encountered on the remains from Roman times: sculpture works, brick, coins, etc .., some of which are located at the National Museum. Kanitz says that Pincum.as the main stock of the Roman metal production in the Pek area, in addition to the military, had economic significance too. There were several roads, that led from the interior to his dock. And on the left, Hungarian bank of the Danube, Pincum was protected by a small town, which walls were found by Marsigli near Hungarian Pozezeno. Which is opposite the Serbian village of the same name, just below the Gradiste.
